Shobha Sriharan is the Professor of Environmental Science in the Department of Agriculture at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia. She administers grants funded by the USDA NIFA (National Institute of Food and Agriculture) on teaching of Geographic Information System (GIS), Climate Change, and Global Contemporary Studies. As a result of teaching GIS course, both science and non-science majors gain knowledge of basics of the GIS, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Remote Sensing (RS). As a 2011 Fulbright Scholar, Shobha has used GIS and remote sensing (rs) in environmental changes such as land cover due to urbanization at High Tech City in the suburb of Hyderabad City, capital of Andhra Pradesh, India.  She is responsible for developing collaborations for teaching GIS and rs courses in Mid-Atlantic Universities (Delaware State University and Elizabeth City State University) and creating awareness of GIS instruction at the high schools in Southside Virginia through teacher preparation and student experiential learning.
